Influential: Drawing Inspiration From Other Music Producers

Rob Solo | June 7, 2023

As a music producer, my sound is influenced and inspired by the work of music that I love listening to. How I developed my own unique style is by drawing inspiration from other music producers who have made a significant impact on the industry. Being highly influenced by the 80’s and 90’s, in my music you’ll hear various aspects of their productions, including their approach to composition, arrangement, sound design, and overall sonic aesthetic. By studying and learning from the work of other producers, a music producer can refine their skills, gain new perspectives, and ultimately develop their own distinctive style that sets them apart in the ever-evolving landscape of music production.

David Foster, Giorgio Moroder, Max Martin, and Mike Dean are four of the most influential and successful music producers of all time. Their music has become synonymous with pop, dance, rap, and electronic music, with productions have been widely celebrated for their innovative, upbeat, and catchy sound. I want to share why I’m always drawn to their music and what made these producers so great, liked, and mainstream, and what made their productions so distinctive and popular.

David Foster, ” The All-Around Musician”

David Foster is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and record producer who has been involved in the music industry for over five decades. He is known for his work in a variety of genres, including pop, rock, and R&B, but he is best known for his work in the world of film, rock, pop, instrumental, and contemporary pop music. Foster has produced some of the most memorable and iconic movie soundtracks of all time, including “The Bodyguard,” “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and “Forrest Gump.” He is also known for his work with some of the biggest names in pop music, including Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Barbra Streisand. Foster’s productions are characterized by their lush and intricate arrangements, their sweeping orchestral soundscapes, and their attention to detail. He is known for his ability to craft original memorable and timeless melodies that have a lasting impact on audiences, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest record producers of all time. David’s melodic keyboard performance and chord progressions and creative use of analog synthesizers fused with acoustic instruments are examples of his influence on some of my tracks.

Giorgio Moroder, “The Dancing Machine”

Giorgio Moroder is an Italian record producer, songwriter, and performer who is often referred to as the “Father of Disco.” Moroder’s work in the 1970s and 1980s revolutionized dance music and paved the way for the development of electronic dance music as we know it today. He is best known for his work with Donna Summer, including the iconic hit “I Feel Love” as well as producing soundtracks to classic motion pictures such as “Scarface” and “Flash Dance”. Moroder’s productions are characterized by their innovative use of synthesizers, their pulsing upbeat dance beats, and their soaring vocal harmonies. He is also known for his distinctive use of sound effects and his ability to create a seamless and immersive musical experience. Moroder’s influence on dance music and electronic music has been immense, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in the history of popular music. Giorgio’s drum machine Italo disco grooves (you’ll hear a lot of the Linn in his classic tracks) and synth basslines with his over compressed guitar harmonies are some examples of his inspiration.

Max Martin, “The Hit-Maker”

Max Martin is a Swedish songwriter and record producer who has been involved in the music industry for over three decades. He is best known for his work in the world of pop music, and he has produced some of the biggest and most successful pop songs of all time. Martin’s productions are characterized by their high energy and infectious sound, their memorable and catchy choruses, and their innovative use of electronic instruments and effects. He is known for his songwriting ability to craft timeless and universal pop songs that resonate with audiences around the world, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest pop songwriters of all time. I’m influenced by Max’s simple chord progressions and ability to compose great build ups that lead to huge, overwhelming choruses is one of these secret sauces to a song’s emotional and powerful arrangement.

Mike Dean, “The Synth-Master”

Mike Dean is an American record producer, audio engineer, and musician who has made significant contributions to various genres, including hip-hop, R&B, and pop music. He is known for his work with numerous high-profile artists such as Kanye West, Travis Scott, Jay-Z, and Madonna. Dean’s productions are characterized by their bold and experimental sound, blending elements of different genres to create a unique sonic landscape. He came to fame while working at Rap-A-Records, to which his productions developed often feature layered and intricate arrangements, incorporating elements from various musical styles, including synthesizers, orchestral instruments, and unconventional sounds. His attention to detail and meticulous approach to production contribute to the distinctive and polished sound that he is known for. I’ve always been hooked on Mike’s special talent for composing dramatic gangsta rap beats on top of catchy, synth-heavy hooks.

Consistently Producing High-Quality and Innovative Music

What made these producers so great, liked, and mainstream is their ability to consistently produce high-quality and innovative music that appeals to a wide range of audiences. Foster, Moroder, Martin and Dean all had a unique vision for their music, and they were able to use their creativity and technical skills to bring that vision to life. They all had a deep understanding of the music industry and the various trends and styles that were popular at the time, and they were able to use that knowledge to create music that was both cutting-edge and accessible. They also had a keen sense of what audiences wanted to hear, and they were able to craft songs and productions that struck a chord with audiences around the world.  I’m humbled that I have such great influences to help guide my production style and quality, always being mindful of their contributions to artistry, originality, and craftsmanship to create and produce amazing musical works.
